Nicolas Feldmeyer, Untitled (Wrapped Portico)

June 1st – 14th 2012 the columns at the entrance of Univeristy College London were wrapped in textiles as part of the Slade School of Fine Art’s final-year show, by Nicolas Feldmeyer from MFA. The artist was inspired by the potential of the space in front of the University, using the medium of weaving to speak of the timeless architectural qualities of weave, imagining the columns to be the ‘warp’ of the building.

His work has helped me further imagine the form of the sculptures I am beginning to work on, to be created in rope wrapped between trees, and has persuaded me to consider using thicker ‘weft’ materials, for larger scale pieces.
