End of 2nd year work…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Project to develop a range of recycled woven fabrics made from plastic bags.

The collection is named ‘Belfast Brights’ inspired by living, working and observing in Belfast.

These versatile fabrics could be used for fashion or interiors, sports wear or outdoor furnishing. By making such a multipurpose, recycled material, I hoped to pose questions to the consumer about the damaging world of fast fashion.

Below some CAD illustration to show the styling and mood of the samples.

Experimenting with Rusting Fabrics

ImageI first became interested in rusting as a treatment for fabrics when I accidentally damaged a white dress by sitting on a rusty bench which I did not realize was wet. Of course I had a big orange splodge on the bum and this really frustrated me as I tried over and over the use vanish on it. Two years later I plucked up the courage to try and rust the whole dress. I started at home, trying to rust it with metal collected from around Belfast, but did not find the results brights enough. When we started a rusting workshop in Uni the results were so vibrant I knew I had to do the dress again, this time wrapped around a thick metal chain, and the results can be seen above (voila!) on a washing line with the other samples. Now to see if I can wear it without being dyed orange myself!

Cloud Scrapers

Photographs from my trip to USA 2011, having never seen skyscrapers before I was reminiscing on how amazed I was by the scale of Chicago.
In the centre is Anish Kapoor’s ‘Cloud Gate,’ in Millennium Park, the background shows the skyline plus the famous Lake Shore Drive. The amount of art we saw in our short time in the city has had a lasting impression on my research; in this design you can pick out Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting ‘Sky Above Clouds IV’ and more from the Art Institute.

Belfast; new perspectives

Belfast; new perspectives

Recently been practicing CAD, my images of Belfast used really illustrate the clashing cultures we have in our city. The Islamic-influenced patterned ceiling found in a Catholic church, over laid on an aerial view of some of the cranes in Titanic Quarter, and in the forefront a snap shot of Donegal Pass: Union Jack with Chinese Lanterns. Also a wee reference to the Belfast School of Art where I spend most of my days.
